Even though fans do not mind spending hundreds of dollars to see the concerts of their favorite artists, the experience can get ruined due to multiple reasons like poor sound quality, inadequate management, and… well, the artist getting caught lip-syncing too.
Let’s look at 5 singers who got caught in the act of lip-syncing and obviously, received quite a lot of criticism for it.
5. Ashlee Simpson (2004)
During a “Saturday Night Live” episode, things went horribly wrong when singer Ashlee Simpson was caught off-guarded because her movements did not match the song being played. While the public speculated she might be lip-syncing, she denied the accusations and blamed it on her tech team. Well, that went even downhill because of the backlash she faced for not owning up to her mistake.
4. Britney Spears (2007)
If not all of Britney’s performances, she has been caught lip-syncing in most of them, which she has obviously denied as being some “unfortunate incidents”. However, one of the most evident “unfortunate incidents” of hers remains from the 2007 MTV Awards when she was performing her song “Gimme More”, or probably, just murmuring it while it played in the background!
3. Beyonce (2013)
You might be thinking that Beyonce is so talented, so why did she even do it? However, one good thing about the incident is that Beyonce owned up to it like a true artist. She had to sing the national anthem but did not get enough time to practice it with the orchestra. Given how big of a deal singing the national anthem is in front of the President of the U.S., she took the safer road but nevertheless, got caught in the act!
2. Katy Perry (2013)
Getting your lip-syncing noticed at a music awards show while singing your own single is something pretty embarrassing, and that is exactly what happened with Katy Perry at the 2013 NRJ Music Awards. However, after getting caught in the act, she tried her best and saved the performance by effortlessly switching to live singing.
1. Mariah Carey (2016)
The New Year’s Eve of 2016 was not much lucky for Mariah Carey and that is because of her blundered performance on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” Due to some technical issues, she visibly went out of sync with the pre-recorded track and thus, eventually stopped singing. She decided to end her performance early on a humorous note saying, “I’m trying to be a good sport here!”
While artists can opt for lip-syncing for many purposes, it becomes quite a scene when they fail to perfect their job. However, the right thing to do is for the audience to approach the situation a bit calmly and the artist to accept their mistake, whatever the reason might be.
